Derek winced as Gabe straightened him out on his bed. Jesus

Christ, everything on him hurt. Gaia really packed a punch in her

attack. She could have killed him but didn’t, and it bugged the shit out of him that he didn’t know why. With the strength of her earth call,

she wouldn’t even have to break a sweat.

So why didn’t she just kill him?

Gabe untied and removed Derek’s boots, his concentration on

anything but Derek. He’d barely looked at him since he helped Derek

into bed. He pulled Derek’s socks off and stood up off the bed.

“Anything else?”

Derek sat up slowly so as not to piss off any of his body parts.

“What’s going on?”

With his back to Derek, Gabe visibly stiffened and squared his

shoulders. “Nothing.”

“Bullshit.”

“Derek, just drop it.”

He swung around and put his feet on the floor to push himself off

the bed. After marching over to him, he grabbed Gabe’s shoulder and

whipped him around.

The air between them buzzed and lifted the hairs on the back of

Derek’s neck. His element was clearly agitated, and so was he. “What

the hell is the matter with you?”

“Me?” Gabe jerked out of his grasp, his green eyes blazing as they

burrowed into his soul. “Derek, you could have been killed.”

“I had it under control.”

“The hell you did! Look at you. Burns had to drag your ass back
